When Elspeth Noblin dies she leaves her beautiful flat overlooking Highgate Cemetery to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina Poole, on the condition that their mother is never allowed to cross the threshold. But until the solicitor's letter falls through the door of their suburban American home, either Julia nor Valentina knew their aunt existed. The twins hope that in London their own, separate, lives can finally begin but they have no idea that they've been summoned into a tangle of fraying lives, from the obsessive-compulsive crossword setter who lives above them to their aunt's mysterious and elusive lover who lives below them and works in the cemetery itself.

As the twins unravel the secrets of their aunt, who doesn't seem quite ready to leave her flat, even after death, Niffenegger weaves together a delicious and deadly ghost story about love, loss and identity.

I found this really disappointing to be honest - hoping it finds a reader who enjoys it more! I really didn't understand the motivation of Valentina or why Robert or Elspeth decided to help her - it just seemed really odd. I also found the relationships in it a bit on the disturbing side with a much older man being interested in a vulnerable teenager... The setting of Highgate cemetery was interesting though.

Thank you sarahmangan for sharing this book with me - and for the postcard and the massive half penny, not sure I had ever seen such a big one! :-) A lovely New Year present!
Looking forward to reading it!

Finally got round to reading this book.

I found it enjoyable and I liked learning more about the Highgate Cemetery, but I found the characters too shallow. I had figured out the "big secret" in the first 5 pages and I found the approach far too reminiscent of the Time Traveler's story, even though it is very different.

Despite the lack of depth in the story and the characters, I still enjoyed the book - I am not sure I will read another one by Niffenegger, but it still ranks higher than some awful books I read in the last couple of years! :-)

I shall send this book on as soon as I have found its next reader!

Thank you sarahmangan for sharing this book!

What a great book! It started out good and got better and better as I got into it. A ghost story, a love story...a story that should be creepy but isn't (to me, at least)!!! It's the most original novel I've read in a long time.

Favorite line:

"It wasn't quite raining, but it wasn't exactly not raining either."

I know exactly what this means, and I happened to be experiencing that kind of weather on the day I read this!

Bonus...The Girl in the Fireplace, one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes, is mentioned. So perfect.

I'm glad I saved this book to read when I truly had time to devote to it. It's definitely not the kind of story you can put down then come back to in a week. I just loved it!

Thanks again for sharing this with me. I'll be sure to release this someplace special, where it has a good chance of getting caught.
