It's 1946 and author Juliet Ashton can't think what to write next. Out of the blue, she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey - by chance, he's acquired a book that once belonged to her - and, spurred on by their mutual love of reading, they begin a correspondence. When Dawsey reveals that he is a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, her curiosity is piqued and it's not long before she begins to hear from other members. As letters fly back and forth with stories of life in Guernsey under the German Occupation, Juliet soon realizes that the society is every bit as extraordinary as its name.

Currently reading it.
Even though it was a very popular novel, for some reason I had always avoided reading it... I thought it would be some cheesy romantic piece of chick-lit, which is not my favourite genre by far.
Once more, I have been pleasantly surprised after reading a book for the WishList game...
The novel is structured as a series of letters, and it deals with the relationship between a young female writer and the Guernsey islanders after the Second World War; they all have stories to tell, and what stories they are! And it is very well written indeed, with larger-than-life characters and a plot which grows on you.
How this book was written is a story in itself; Ms Shaffer got seriously ill, and asked her niece, Ms Barrows, to finish it. Unfortunately, Ms Shaffer never lived to see her book's success.
Some quotes:
"Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true."
"That's what I love about reading: one tiny thing will interest you in a book, and that tiny thing will lead you on to another book, and another bit there will lead you on to a third book. It's geometrically progressive... all with no end in sight, and for no other reason than sheer enjoyment." (I couldn't agree more!)
Thanks, Sparkish, for making this book available, I have really enjoyed reading it... and it will soon fly to the hands of its next reader. :)

Thank you for sending it!
A bittersweet post-World War II book written in letters and set on the island of Guernsey. I really enjoyed the writing and characters. The slow-burn romance was wonderfully crafted!
Left on the book exchange shelves at LOKAL.
