Finished it on Monday, Dec.8, 2014 sitting on my balcony at the Royal Kona Resort in Kona on the big island. 1015 am.

I couldn't put this book down because there was so much action. This guy thrived on physical challenges and was tough as nails. Because he was a god fearing patriot he made a perfect soldier. I agreed with him that it was not his job to figure out whether a war was fair or not. That is not his decision. But I cannot understand people who believe in god and are so patriotic they can't hear any criticism of their country. He seemed to not be aware that his country is great at attacking other countries for their oil resources and installing "democracies" with puppet leaders sympathetic to allowing American resource extraction while the citizens suffer.

If he was alive and heard me say that he would beat me senseless. It's also hard to hear about the tough guy club he belonged to that needed to prove it's superior toughness over other people. Way too much testosterone. But I guess you have to pump up for combat.

His wife provided commentary on her feelings and what it was like to be with someone like that. Home alone a lot of the time worrying him, raising the children and then having to face him wanting to reinlist. She was quite open but again it's hard to buy into her god stuff. Helps if you aren't an atheist.

Ironically he was murdered with a gun by a vet - the kind of guy he was trying to help. His wife mentioned his death very matter of factly which was shocking. Up until that point I had no idea he was dead. She should have included a detailed description of what she knew or at least what she could say given that there were still legal proceedings.

War is utter hell but it helps if you are a danger/action junkie. Many of the conflicts the US is involved were created or made worse by their foreign policies. Would be nice to see them mediate conflicts respectfully rather than create such havoc that the troops need to be brought in. There are educated people who know how to do that.

This is an interesting account of what war is like. I, however, do not agree with the Chicago Sun Times "Jaw-dropping...Undeniably riveting." This is a man's story of what he did and how it affected him. It's a read that gives you a glimpse of a soldiers life. I have immense respect for Mr. Kyle and his brothers-in-arms in his country and in mine. It is because of what they did and do and their sacrifice that affords me the ability to lead the life I do and to be able to comment freely without fear. Thank you to all those in the services.
