I don't usually buy hardbacks but I spotted this recent release in a charity shop for £1, well say no more.......

This, unsurprisingly, follows the same format as many, many, earlier books by Roberts. Now, I don't have a problem with that, as it means I know what I'm going to get & I have rarely (if ever) been overly disappointed.

The stars of this novel are Lila & Ash. Lila, is a house sitter, writer & apparently able to turn her talents to any type of D-I-Ying required....& of course she is wary of commitment, not that it gives Ash any cause for concern. Ash would seem to be the perfect hero...artistic, handsome & loaded with dosh - c'mon who wouldn't fancy being whisked away in a private plane? Now I'll admit that sometimes while engrossed in the story, I might just fall a little in love with the lead male but Ash? Nope...mainly towards the close, he struck me as domineering, overbearing & a touch patronising - or maybe I've just read too many books where a man starts off Ash-like in character & turns out to be abusive. Still that in no way affected my enjoyment of the tale.

The story, involving the murder of Ash's brother & the discovery of a Faberge egg, does to be fair, push credibility at times. The actions of the police in particular need taking with a pinch of salt but I read Robert's romantic suspense for the escapism so I don't want bogging down with police procedures, forensics or "real life" in general, & am just happy to go wherever it takes me. At nearly 500 pages, a lot of it could probably have been cut as at times nothing much happened yet despite that it didn't feel as if it was unnecessarily padded out.

Not my favourite by this author but I got what I expected & it kept me entertained throughout - what more could I want?
