Burial Rites

This novel has received rave reviews and many awards... so I started it with high expectations... which were fully met! The plotline is absorbing - I had deliberately not read about the true story of Agnes Magnusdottir in order to avoid 'spoilers - but it is the quality of the writing that makes this one such a standout for me! I would often consciously stop reading at my usual breakneck speed in order to re-read a particular sentence - stunned by the beauty of the prose.
It's hard to believe that this was a debut novel - such was the strong characterisation, gripping storyline, and wonderful writing. My book of 2014!

Taking to meetup for the Evil Santa bookswap....
Hopefully whoever 'steals' this one will enjoy it as much as I did!

As soon as I heard this was a standout book for lmn60, I snaffled it from another bookcrosser at our evil bookswap! I have enjoyed everything she has ever recommended so couldn’t let this one go by.
I have put off journalling this book for over a month! I savoured every word of this exquisitely written book, at times not wanting to put it down so I could find out what was going to happen next, at other times, eking it so the book would last longer! The first 10* book I have read for a long time, particularly impressive as a debut novel.
This is a story set in the 1800's in Iceland about a convicted murderer ; how she became a murderer and how she lives as her death sentence draws near. The story of Agnes, her pastor Toti and the family she is sent to live with in her final days is rivetting whilst every sentence is beautifully descriptive.
I loved this book - thanks for this excellent kris kringle lmn60!

Loved the book, the way the author describe the landscape and the lives of the people in the north of Iceland.
An amazing read.
I noticed there is another book coming out by Hannah Kent the author, must buy.
