a mysterious novel
Picked up from the NC today.
cover:
Arresting and wonderful, The Accidental pans in on the Norfolk holiday home of the Smart family one hot summer. There, a beguiling stranger called Amber appears at the door bearing all sorts of unexpected gifts, trampling over family boundaries and sending each of the Smarts scurrying from the dark into the light.
A novel about the ways that seemingly chance encounters irrevocably transform our understanding of ourselves, The Accidental explores the nature of truth, the role of fate and the power of storytelling.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Took me too long to get to it, Will be released at the meeting
I've been reading Ali Smith's seasons quartet and loved the two I've read so far. I also have There But For The, so I'm really looking forward to reading The Accidental and was delighted to find it in Castricum. Thank you!
I was looking for the Ali Smith magic I found in the first two of her Seasons cycle, but this was rather too prosaic. I picked it up because I happened to notice it was set in Norfolk and was about to visit my sister who has just moved there. It's about a dysfunctional family where each individual is wrapped up in their own problems, some of which were severe. It did make me wonder why they bothered to move to a holiday cottage if they weren't going to spend any time together. When an opinionated young woman turns up, everyone assumes somebody else invited her, but soon she is manipulating the entire family by giving each what they feel they need at the time. Certainly intriguing!
