This charming classic, first published in 1970, brings together twenty years of correspondence between Helene Hanff, a freelance writer living in New York City, and a used book dealer in London. Through the years, though never meeting and separated both geographically and culturally, they share a winsome, sentimental friendship based on their common love for books.
A slim book but interesting in that it provides insight into life in Britain and in the U.S. after World War II.

Loved the book! It's great to know that people can become friends via the mail (coming from a retired postal employee). Not sure what I am going to do with this book yet, reserving it for a future bookring.

Thanks so much for sending this my way!
I really, really enjoyed this book! It was hilarious, heart-warming, and a bit sad---mostly funny, though, as I found myself laughing out loud several times! I'm almost happy Helene never made the trip to England. With a postal mail relationship of that length, it's almost as if the correspondents were characters---not quite real to each other---and sometimes it's good to leave things that way. I've met internet friends in person after having communicated online for several years and it always seems something is lost after. Some bit of intrigue...or they don't look as I imagined they would...or we seem to not connect as well as we did before meeting. Anyway, lovely book. I'm really glad I read it.
