In a wistful, clever and unusual novel, Amelie Nothomb casts herself as hunger: hunger for experience, hunger for life, hunger for sweetness and, in what is the book's nucleus, hunger for hunger (the period during which she was afflicted by acute anorexia). Recounting the formative journeys of her youth, from Tokyo to Peking to Paris to New York, "The Life of Hunger" is a brilliant and moving examination of the self, and perhaps Amelie's most mature and moving work to date.

This book was not like I anticipated. The story is indeed unusual, but I like it. The protagonist is so unlike me, that I could not feel at all like she did. It fascinated me a lot.

This was an interesting book, more biographical I expected. Nothomb describes herself as a very unusual person - became alcoholic as a child, developed dipsomania and anorexia some years later. I felt empathy for the poor little girl who always had to leave all her surroundings and start a new life in new countries because of her father's work as diplomatic.

Kirjan kansi houkutteli ensin tarttumaan siihen.
