Crime and punishment is Lieutenant Eve Dallas's business. Murder her speciality. Named by the social worker who found her when she was a mere child roaming that city's streets, Eve Dallas is a New York police detective who lives for her job. In over ten years on the force, she's seen it all - and knows her survival depends on her instincts. But she's going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, a charismatic Irish billionaire - and a suspect in Eve's latest murder investigation.
But passion and seduction have rules of their own, and it's up to Eve to take a chance in the arms of a man she knows nothing about - except the addictive hunger of needing his touch.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
A RABCK - enjoy!
Already in my mailbox, thank you so much for this wishlist RABCK and for the lovely bookplates, bookmarks and postcard that accompanied it. Cheers!
It makes me feel just a little bit old that this book was first published in '95, yet it reads incredibly actual, and more than a little bit sad that its deep, troubling tones of social injustice, gun control, misogyny and trauma are still so vibrant in real life, after so many years. It was not the first book in the series for me. I remember vaguely #7, so I was expecting a good crime novel, well-written, suspenseful, reasonably thrilling. Even so, I was gripped and pleasantly surprised even more. This time it was more than a guilty pleasure. The novel tackles sexual trauma in a deep, psychologically accurate way, underlining the inconvenient truth of perpetrators too often being family or close friends. Therapy is taken seriously, as are mental issues. The steamy bits are juicy without the rapey tone that abounds in erotic fiction. The female protagonist is strong and feminine. Licensed companions are regarded as human beings, their choices are not judged. Even if some characters' views are unjust, un-humanitarian, they are pinned on a map of feelings, opinions and law such that they become more than plot devices. Trauma is not a plot device either, although the novel abounds in it.
