I started out with high hopes for this but about halfway through I started to wonder if it actually had a plan to get somewhere. It certainly wasn't a spy novel, though at times it tried to be, and it mostly was too clever for it's own good. The protagonist was an unlikeable woman and the final plot twist was very clumsily handled and I had already lost interest by then. Too bad. McEwan can be great when he is on but this was a dud.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Planned for release at August 2018 Boston Bookcrossing MeetUp.
I claimed this hardcover at this afternoon's BookCrossing Meetup at the Porter Square Panera in Cambridge MA. I'd found another McEwan book interesting - the very quirky Nutshell - and thought I'd give this one a try.
Later: Hmmm. I knew going in that this might be tricky; the flashback storytelling was good, the literary tie-ins interesting (though increasingly infuriating), the secret-agent/conspiracy/political stuff annoying (not my favorite sub-genre)... The opening line was tantalizing, but by the time the protagonist/narrator revealed the more upsetting aspects of her relationship with her budding-author lover I wanted to refer her to an advice columnist. [Difficult, as she's telling the story from decades in the future! Or is she? Check out the plot twist...] Clever, and with some good turns of phrase (and occasionally entertaining snark about the trials of authors), but I found the characters hard to like. Ah, well!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I left this book on a bench in front of one of the shops in the square on this bright, breezy day. (There's a large mural containing a page from The Velveteen Rabbit on the wall, very cool!) Hope the finder enjoys the book!
