In 2004, at a beach resort on the coast of Sri Lanka, Sonali Deraniyagala and her family—parents, husband, sons—were swept away by a tsunami. Only Sonali survived to tell their tale. This is her account of the nearly incomprehensible event and its aftermath.

A beautifully-written book that intricately weaves the story of the wave and how the author lost her family, how she dealt with this incomprehensible loss and the story of the beautiful life that she had before her family was taken from her.

Thank you, tabby-cat-owner! I look forward to reading it. It looks interesting, though of course very sad.

An amazing and heartbreaking account of grief in all its stages and facets...from, at first, not wanting to think about her deceased loved ones, or to see anything related to them, to finally - after several years of pain - wanting all the reminders she can find, both in tangible objects and in memories. Beautifully written.
One surprising and disturbing section was Ms. Deraniyagala's account of her efforts to terrorize a Dutch family who has rented her parents' home in Sri Lanka, by means of middle-of-the-night phone calls and worse. While this seems so greatly out of character for her, it also shows what grief can do to a person. How dare someone else live there, now that her parents have died in such a terrible way?
Compelling and highly recommended!
