Still reading so far my first impression is interesting but rather exhausting because the story is told in the same style as this journal entry which means very little punctuation and sentences that go on and on and sometimes jump around and the only place your mental voice can take a breath is when you eventually get to the period at the end. I think this would be very hard for someone to read aloud as an audiobook because doing the phrasing to give the same impression as the printed page would be quite tricky I mean if I were reading it I would end up doing each sentence in one long rush because there's no place to stop. It hurts my brain a bit but I haven't given up yet.

Oh, and I think I need an Aussie glossary. :p

Decided to make a separate journal entry for my adventures in learning Australian English - Aussie readers can skip this part. ;)

Some of the sources I'm using:

Australian Slang Dictionary
Australian English Glossary
Australian Dictionary

What I've learned so far: I can often guess from context..but not always. I had no idea about Macca's. Also, some of these may not be specifically Australian (for instance, secateurs) - just not a part of this American's working vocabulary - and there were some things I looked up that were just cooking and plant terms I didn't know (chine, for one).

▫ cleanskin bottles = generic wine with no winery information.
▫ cocky = cockatoo, unsurprisingly.
▫ crook = sick, ill.
▫ chook = chicken, at least in this case.
▫ dob me in = dime me out, squeal, inform.
▫ doona = duvet.
▫ dropkick => dipstick. Ok, I get that one; I may even have met a couple. :p
▫ esky = large cooler; apparently shortened from Eskimo cooler. I think we have an Igloo cooler somewhere. ;)
▫ footy ground = football (aka soccer) field.
▫ Macca's = McDonalds (nickname similar to Mickey D's).
▫ secateurs = I'd encountered this one before and thought it just meant scissors, but apparently they're usually pruning shears.
▫ skolling (a drink) = chugging it (all in one gulp).
▫ texta = felt-tip marker.
▫ ute = utility vehicle/truck.

Things I haven't figured out yet:

▪ "I shoved barley and lupins into it like berley into a sock." So what's berley?

As dustyflint says, quite a ride! Well, you can't accuse Zac of not knowing how to focus...not to say obsess! Makes you think about food differently, for all sorts of reasons. Oh, and I won't tell you how long it took me to figure out that Hunter and Hunna were the same person. :p

This may be headed out for J4shaw's Australian Literature Sweepstakes if I don't find something lighter first.

I'll count this for kiwiinengland's 666 challenge: this is book 1 for Oceania (Australia).

Oh this was good. I loved the foodiness of it and Zac's observations about the other characters. Cannot believe it isn't on any wishlists! Will track down a reader who I think will appreciate it. (They aren't getting the koala bookmark though. LOL.) Thanks so much for sending me this Hyphen8, it was a good choice.

Oh, this looks like just a book for me! I love cooking (and eating) and if I get the text on the back cover right, it's about a young person getting a last chance to make something of his life. Also very interesting.
All in all: the combination is quite irresistable 😀

In grammar school we were already quite busy learning the difference between American and British English. They didn't dare add Australian also, so I guess they'll be used a lot when reading...

When I started reading this book, I really had to get used to the lack of punctuation in Zac's thoughts.
When I got the hang of it, the book got a lot better😁

It was an interesting read, but what keeps puzzling me is, why he did what he did.
Having a dream of opening his own restaurant one day (soon) is one thing, but why on earth would a lad as ambitious as he was throw away his future like that?

A very delicious read as well: the dishes Zac prepared often made my mouth water.
