Having recently acquired "Crusade" the sequel to this I was pleased to find this in a box of donated books.
An historical novel based on the life of Hereward the Wake, known as the last great English warrior. He lead a very full life, banished into exile as a teenager, he became a skilled fighter who made his way back to England to fight William the Conqueror and battle to win England back from the Normans. It's a very full book that makes the reader really wonder what life in the UK would have been like had Harold and his loyal followers like Hereward won the Battle of Hastings.

The long life and adventurous times of the legendary Hereward of Bourne, later known as Hereward the Wake, including the dastardly deeds of William the Bastard (boo! hiss!) and the disastrous events that left English culture at the mercy of the Normans. I found it very painful, couldn't bear to read more than a couple of chapters at a time! Rather like watching a train crash, knowing that there's absolutely nothing you can do to prevent the inevitable death and destruction! No matter how much I read about 1066 and all that, the wrong side always wins ....

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
BookCrosser kirjakko is visiting York, so a few BookCrossers are gathering to meet her on Saturday afternoon.
This is one of the books I'm bringing with me to share.
If it's not claimed, then it'll be left on the permanent bookshelves within this delightful pub.
Over a million people around the world give their books a unique BookCrossing IDentity number (BCID) before sending them out to find new readers. Since the start of the scheme in April 2001 more than ten million such books have been put into circulation. This is one of them!
Our hope is that we can track the progress of our books once they've left our hands - and that's possible if finders like you visit the website, key in the BCID and leave a comment, however long or short. It's fun, it doesn't have to cost anything, although the site always appreciates donations towards running costs, and you can remain anonymous if you wish. You don't have to join but if you do you'll be able to number and track your own books!

That was a great read. I found it hard to put down, despite knowing the outcome and wanting it to be different. As Nu-Knees rightly said "the wrong side always wins"! William was a brilliant general but he was a bit short on people skills!
I will be looking for further books by this author.

RABCK for a Bookcrossing friend.
This and a few goodies was waiting for me when I got in from work. What a lovely surprise. Looks interesting and I look forward to reading it. Thanks for sharing.
'Conquest' is a compelling story and a gripping page-turner, that mixes historical detail with fanciful flights of fiction that leads you on a journey of adventure and an education of a dramatic time period. The author paints vivid pictures that share many of the same characteristics as Bernard Cornwell's Arthurian series and its obvious that he has done his research. I am a fan of historical fiction so this book is right up my street and Hereward, a real if sketchy person, was someone whom I previously knew nothing about. An engrossing and enjoyable read, however one that is overshadowed by Julian Rathbone's 'The Last English King' which covers similar historical events.
