A love story, a coming of age story, a he done her wrong story, an overcoming narrowminded prejudice story, a taking life by the horns story. That's a lot to pack into a very sweet and gently paced book. I couldn't put it down.

Major Pettigew (retired) has pretty much settled into his life in a country house. He is a widower, embedded in his small village, content with his life, having raised a sucessful son. So what could be lacking? The death of his only brother upsets this quiet life, with the fuss and bother of dealing with a funeral and an estate. Into this mix he forms an unlikely chance friendship with the shopkeeper down in the village, Mrs. Ali, a widow herself. From here, the doors to his world start to open up, as he realizes the costs of never taking a chance, the hurts of never looking around, the regrets of not taking action. Wonderful story, believable characters throughout. (Well, maybe not Grace, she seems a little too disinterested....).

The kind of book you reread the first chapter immediately afterwards, because you don't want to let the people go out of your life.

Fly far little book!
