A strange and unique book - playful and pretentious all in one! There is a very simple story in this book: a man sees another man arguing with a passenger on a crowded Paris bus. By chance, later that same day he sees the same man talking to a friend about the button on his coat. However, this same story is told 99 different ways in 99 different styles of writing, from sonnets to insults to spoonerisms. Some are funny, clever and inventive, but some are annoying and illegible! This must also have been very difficult to translate - the translator has done a very good job!

Safe with me, thank you so much for the books and card. Looks like an interesting experiment!
What an experiment. A short and simple story is retold 99 times in different styles, shapes and sizes. Far more efficient than a figures of speech dictionary, and by and large funnier.
Thank you for sharing, the book will travel next to blackwidow1971 via the EURO 1001 VBB (once I finish reading the rest of the books she chose).

I enjoyed this and yes, it is funny and pretentious at the same time (much like me....) I think there were only 1 or 2 of the 99 I really couldn't read - I got the hang of the reordered letters ones in the end. However the introduction by Umberto Eco and the essay by Italo Calvino went straight over my head and I abandoned.
A quick read to kick start my 2016 1001 BTRBYD challenge.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
On its way to Soffita1.
This just looks fascinating! Thanks for sending me this.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I really liked to see how the author played with language and styles. It got me thinking about styles I like and also to appreciate the work writers put into their own writing.
Reserved for a trip Down Under.
