I found this fair-condition little Penguin 60s softcover at the Book Cellar, and nabbed it for a possible geocache release. It contains three Alcott stories, including the title story, "How I Went Out to Service," and "Transcendental Wild Oats". The latter two are autobiographical, or partly so, one dealing with young Louisa's attempt at a job as companion in a very strange household, and the latter with the attempt at back-to-nature living at Fruitlands (now a heritage museum/preserve/art-gallery - I've visited there, and it's in a simply lovely location). Her father was among the founders, and her story - names changed to protect the naive - describes, in a delightfully flippant tone, some of the problems encountered by city folk who try living off the land with no practical experience.

The title story is a jolly one about a farm family preparing for Thanksgiving when the mother is summoned away to an ailing relative, leaving the older children to attempt to produce a feast on their own. Their attempts are somewhat mixed - the bit about mistaking wormwood and catnip for sweet marjoram and summer savory had me laughing out loud - and the story as a whole is really charming.
