This one looked interesting. Just what I need, another book for Mt. TBR.

A really fun and interesting read that I found hard to put down. (I was even a bit late leaving for work this morning so I could finish it.) Ruth's tales of learning to cook from an early age -- at least partially in self-defense -- and how her love of truly good food guided her through so much of her life is fascinating, even for someone who doesn't know that much about food and has no interest in eating half of the exotic delicacies she described. You come to love Ruth as you learn about her unconventional upbringing, with a bipolar mother who went undiagnosed for years and parents who had absolute faith in her ability to take care of herself and let her prove it in odd situations at way too early an age. The use of food as a bridge with so many cultures and types of people all over the world is wonderful and I find myself wishing that I could connect with others that well on a similar level. I was mildly intrigued by the recipes she included, although I am not enough of a cook or a foodie to be tempted to try them. All in all, a really enjoyable and quick read that I have now passed along to my friend who is both a cook and a foodie and has a difficult mother as well -- it just seemed like the type of book she would love.
