I got this good-condition softcover from the charity-sale shelves at a local Hannaford's. It's the second book in a series about a 19th-century street kid who hooks up with the son and daughter of a wealthy family to battle an ancient Mayan vampire god. Here, Jack, Ben, and Emily are settled happily in London, sad for the loved ones they lost in the battle with the vampires, but glad to have survived and - as they thought - vanquished the vampire god.

But now there are news stories of a strange plague in Paris, one that sounds very familiar. And Jack's been having nightmares about vampires...

This is a pretty fast-moving story, with a threat that turns terrifying in short order - terrifying and seemingly insurmountable. Somehow, between them - and with the help of young Dominique, niece of a French anthropologist - they fend off the vampires, but are forced into a potentially deadly exchange to save the life of one of their own.

This series doesn't shy away from death and other terrors; the vampires are dangerous and scary, the personal losses are tragic, and the threats seem too deadly to defeat. But the kids are clever and resilient - and persistent, and make good use of the resources they have. Might be too gruesome for younger readers - unless they're as avid for horror as I was as a kid {wry grin}.
