A masterpiece that is breathtaking in its scope, SARUM is an epic novel that traces the entire turbulent course of English history. This rich tapesty weaves a compelling saga of five families who preserve their own particular characteristics over the centuries, and offer a fascinating glimpse into the future.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I read it when it was first released and was delighted to find it again at the used book store. I have the next reader already in mind.

I received this great book for my birthday, thanks for helping to make my birthday special!
Sarum tells 6000 years of English history by fictionalizing the daily life of people living on the Salisbury Plain. I especially liked the chapters on the formation of the English Channel and the building of Stonehenge. I found most of Sarum very engaging, especially since I majored in History in college and find the history of England a particular favorite.
Thanks for sharing and this one is ready to move on.

Well written book that takes the reader through 6000 years of English history through fictional people. It reminded me of the James Michener books that I have read. This overview of English history begins with the earliest settling of the Salisbury Plain by primitive hunters and farmers. As civilization develops and flourishes, so the story, evolving into a saga of five families who shape and are shaped by the events of this bit of the British historical story.
The creation of Stonehenge will invade your imagination. Christianity comes and the Salisbury Cathedral is a result. Rutherford's research is thorough but it doesn't impede his story.
Rutherford has said about this book that he admires James Michener and deliberately set out to accomplish for England what Michener did for Hawaii, Texas and others. Readers of Michener will enjoy this author.
