An in-depth look at the case that was key to the nurture theory of gender for so long, before being largely discredited. It's a fascinating story, not just about the dreadful effects on the life of David Reimer, who suffered at the hands of well-meaning but misguided scientists, but also about how science can go horribly wrong when ego gets in the way of evidence.

The author (as he admits in the afterword) sometimes goes too far the other way, over-emphasising the nature side of the nature-nurture mix, which makes the book seem biased in places, but generally he does a good job of explaining the motivations on both sides of the debate.

I didn't realise until discussing the book with a friend later that John Money, the psychologist at the heart of it all, is the same John Money who was instrumental in having Janet Frame committed.

An account of how the medical profession can go in the wrong direction despite the best of intentions. I really felt for the family who had to make such difficult, life altering choices and relied upon the judgement and knowledge of the medical professionals around them in doing so.

There was a lot of medical information, but the story was still very understandable. An important read for recognising the rights of intersex and injured babies to be able to live comfortably and make gender choices as they age, rather than forcing permanent changes upon them.

Thank you for sharing. This will be shared at the next BC meet up :)
