Terrific story narrated by a 15 year old boy with an autism-like condition. Very original, funny and compassionate. I liked it a lot.

I've seen this book in shops, but didn't pay it much attention until it won the 2003 WhitBread Award. I'm grateful to Oldbroad for sending a copy my way and I'll be sure to pass it along when I'm done.

I'm sorry I kept this book so long. I carted it from Montreal to Calgary and then from Calgary to Nice, where I've read it at last. Actually, after all that time, I read the entire book in a day. I've traded a few books with OldBroad and find her taste in reading material reliable. This book was no different. OldBroad is right when she describes the book as being a compassionate portrayal of the tenage narrator. Compassionate, but not at all sappy-emotional. Well, it helps that the narrator himself is sort of emotionally disassoicated so that everything is narrated with very straight-ahead, no-fussing-about descriptions. It was nice slipping into the mind of someone else for an afternoon and looking at the world another way.

Thank you, OldBroad. I'll get this book moving again shortly.
