My good friend Wendy surprised me this morning with a bag of almost new paperbacks by my favorite authors. And then we went to O'Niell's Pub for lunch. A perfect day, right?
FROM BACK COVER: Getting old is hell. J.P.Beaumont is finally taking some time off to have knee-replacement surgery. But instead of recuperating, he is plunged into one of the most perplexing and mind-blowing mysteries he's ever faced. A series of dreams takes Beaumont back to his early days on the force with the Seattle PD, and then even earlier to his time in Vietnam. Are these drug-induced hallucinations? Beaumont doesn't think so - not when images from the past lead him to present day murders...and dead bodies from the Second Watch that won't stay buried.

In the mail to bookstogive 2014 BC Birthday Group, Sept b'day. I hope this book is new to you.
I received this fantastic book as part of the 2014 Birthday Group, thanks so much for continuing my birthday! We love the Jance books and do not have this one!
J. P. Beaumont is in the hospital having knee replacement surgery and his wife Mel is tackling a big case and he is feeling left out of the loop. While in the hospital he has some vivid dreams where he sees a murder victim from his first homicide case that was never solved and he makes a plan to reopen this old, cold case and get closure for the victim's family. When he gets a partner from another district to work the case with him they unleash a killer who wants the case to stay closed with disastrous results.
J. P. also is reliving his time in Vietnam and a 2nd Lt that was killed who had saved his life and he decides to contact his fiancee to let her know what happened all those years ago and start to put the past behind him.
This was a good book with the 2 stories going together and allowing closure for Beaumont. I am looking forward to the next in the series and thanks for sharing this one with me. Now heading off to Mom and Dad to read as they really enjoy this series as well.

Thanks for the Jance book. We always look forward to reading another one of her books.
This is a very good story. Beaumont at his finest. He has knee-replacement surgery (I can't imagine having both done at once) and he dives into work on an old unsolved mystery instead of recuperating. He has dreams about when he was on the Seattle PD and also his time in Vietnam. The images of the past are too real to be hallucinations. An exciting and powerful mystery. It kept me turning the pages to the end. Hope the next one comes out soon.
This was a very moving story. Beaumont is in the hospital recovering from double knee replacement surgery. Because of the medication he has been given, he is having dreams of the past, some relating to his time in Vietnam and others to his first case with the Seattle PD. As he gets better he knows he needs to address both of these images. He needs to find the fiance of his leader in the war that saved his life. He, also, needs to find the murderer of the victim of his first case. This is the story of how he goes about taking care of these loose ends. A very good read!!

Thanks so much for this wishlist book - I love the Sheriff Brady & JP Beaumont stories since my dad introduced them to me years back. I appreciate your sharing this one and I'm sure it won't stay on my TBR pile for long.
A thrilling addition to the JP Beaumont series - this one finds Beau laid up after surgery and just a little high on pain pills. While under the influence, he sees 2 people from his past who start him down investigations with far-reaching effects. Jance skillfully weaves the story between the past and the present and it's nice to get to see Beau as he was in his early life. Jance weaves a bit of her past into this tale as she tells us in the afterword. It's a touching story and one that shows how many things turn on the simplest of actions.
A quote to remember:
...sometimes, telling the story and having someone else listen is the only way to figure out how to move on.
