What I liked about this book: the writing. Julian Barnes writes like a master chef cooks, creating something complex and layered with an economy of ingredients. In The Sense of an Ending, Barnes concocts a story regarding the reliability of memory. The main ingredient is failed relationships from Tony Webster's past, focusing mainly on the romantic and fraternal ones he shared at university with Veronica and Adrian respectively.
What I didn't like about this book: the characters. While my rating supports the fact that populating a novel with likeable characters isn't necessary, I do prefer them. While my rating supports the fact that happy endings aren't necessary, I prefer them as well. While my rating supports the fact that you can be annoyed with everyone and all the circumstances surrounding them, I'd prefer the violence of my feelings toward the novel to be less, well - violent.
What I'd like to do if I could enter this novel: grab Veronica, shake her until her teeth rattled, and make her explain herself. Then, I'd like to smack Tony across the back of the head and make him stop accepting her snide, dismissive, and ambiguous statements without question. Despite the fact that my rating supports the fact that I did enjoy the book, I wanted nothing so much as to enter the book and yell at them both, "Oh, shut the fuck up!". :D

Left this and two other books after my yearly physical as a 'thank you' to my thoroughly thorough, intelligent, and amiable nurse-practitioner. Happy reading!
