This is the 230th book I've registered! Strange that should excite me so...but I suppose that is just part of my Bookcrossing addiction.

This book was a gift of the very kind Bookcrosser fanclub & I'm pleased to be starting it.

This is a memoir from a woman who was suffering from panic attacks, depression and hypochondria who decided to become an emergncy meical technician. I'm looking forward to reading this book from a woman who "in helping others I learned to help myself."

While I am not filled with the fears that torment Jane Stern I can certainly relate to her on many levels. I found this story of her quest to become an EMT and overcome her demons very interesting. I was easily caught up with this woman's life; this a very readable memoir.

This was an EXCELLENT book. Thank you very much for sending it to me Alrescate! It's always a good sign when I read a book in under 24 hours! I'm starting a Bookray on this book, but it will be for Australia and New Zealand only. If you are from this part of the world and would like to join, just let me know.

BookRay List:

puppymummy, Victoria, Aus<---It's Here!

The book was posted to 'Hawkette' today, 25 Feb, 2004. In the end, there were 4 people interested in the challenge and today we plucked a name from the hat. The lucky BCer is 'puppymummy'!! With the exception of Hawkette and TramGirl, you can still change places in the list, if you like. Just let me know.

Ohhh! Arrived today.
I toy with the idea of becoming an Ambo actually, and recently saw an ad about the training involved - currently just adding it to the list of professions that I would love to do "when I grow up" (whenever that will be!!). Maybe this book will provide inspiration!
Nevertheless, it looks very interesting, and can't wait to read it!

Journal Entry 8 by TramGirl from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Sunday, March 28, 2004
Got this from Hawkette - she is off galivanting overseas for a month so I'm going to read it and then give it back to her to read when she returns. Should start it in the next couple of days!

Journal Entry 9 by TramGirl from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Sunday, May 16, 2004
I really enjoyed this book, Jane Stern gave a very frank account of her depression and the way she was dealing with it, or not dealing with it! The reasoning behind becoming an EMT and the skills, and better life, she gained from it were amazing. A very well written book which I really enjoyed.

16th May - Currently at Hawkette's place so leaving it here for her to read!

Journal Entry 10 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, May 16, 2004
This one is back with me, and it has managed to maintain it's spot on my TBR pile! It will be read after me current book.

Nothing like an pending essay to make you read a book fast!

This book, for me, was more about the author overcoming her often debilitating depression, panic attacks and phobias. Her process through therapy, and then working through to a point where she realised that helping people reduced her fears and panic attacks - and then actually taking the steps to achieve her identified goal of becoming an EMT.

The anecdotes of individual cases were fascinating - although there was no disclaimer that she had changed names. Always a peeve of mine, not assuring privacy for clients in human services, but I assume she did.

A breakthrough of spirit out of the depths of dispair - an inspiring read.

I enjoyed this well written book, both the author's account of her depression and her experiences as an emergency worker. Quite uplifting! Will be on its way to Meganh as soon as she returns and sends me her address.

I read this over the weekend - an easy read which was interesting and amusing in parts. I cannot imagine being struck with Jane's fears of enclosed places and public transport but admired her courage and fortitude in trying to overcome them. I would have liked to hear a little more of the 9/11 effect - it was only briefly touched upon and yet we know the emergency services in particular were affected deeply.

Recieved safe and sound, thanks to all ahead of me. I have 2 bookrings ahead of this one so may take a while to get to.

I've finished reading this book and I enjoyed it very much. I found it very interesting as well as gorey. I found her short sentences a tad annoying though: 'I did this. Then I did this. Then this happened.' But other than that it was good. It makes me fear falling into depression, which makes me strive to be happier (hope it works).

What is really funny is that I was halfway thru this book when one day I stacked it in my front garden and busted my ankle and ripped open my knee and had to be sent to hospital in an ambulance! While they were bandaging my knee and splinting my leg I asked the ambos if they had heard of the book, but they hadn't. I recommended it to them. I ended up reading the book in ER to while away the hours I was stuck there.

Thankyou for the opportunity to read this book kiwikat, I too read it very quickly. And thankyou to those ahead of me for sending it along.

Cheers

Interesting story. I enjoyed reading this book. I only got the book yesterday and it only took a couple of hours to read. The story had an easy reading style and I didn't find it too gory or boring.

I felt it took a lot of courage for Jane to deal with her issues and phobias and rising out of depression. I wouldn't say that Jane overcame her phobias but they were pushed aside as she found her niche in the fire station and the EMT field. I understood well the lure of the pager and radio dictating her life and her dropping everything to respond to the callout. My house is dictated to by a CFS (Country Fire Service) pager and radio. My husband is a CFS fire-fighter of 10 years and a former Captain. He has left all sorts of functions in the call of duty just like Jane did, wearing all sorts of clothing beneath his fire-fighter protection uniform.

I finished reading this book last night.
I like the writing style, telling us stories and her persoanl experinces on the job.
We were able to go on the journey with her as she trained and then once she got the job.
I was often willing her to be brave and keep going.
She did a great job training to get the job and was able to overcome, or start to deal with, some of her big fears on life.
The fact that its a true story makes it inspiring.
I know I certainly couldn't do her job, especially having to get out of bed at any time of the day.

This is off to boreal when we next meet. :o)

Rarsberry gave this to me this morning when we met in Dunedin's Botanic Gardens to release a few books. It is beautiful there at this time of the year and with it being such a lovely day certainly helped.
Anyway I am looking forward to reading this -I have one bookring book ahead of it but with a long weekend looming and being out of town, away from such distractions as TV's and computers, I should be able to get plenty of reading done.

Journal Entry 24 by boreal from Dunedin, Otago New Zealand on Thursday, October 28, 2004
I really enjoyed this and it was quick to read too, an added bonus when you have a large TBR pile. I admire how the author overcame her phobias to achieve her goal, I can't imagine what it would be like being as phobic as she was and still manage to become a EMT. It was very inspiring and shows when you set your mind to something you can overcome your fears. Being an EMT is not something I aspire to but it was interesting learning about their training and work.
This was a very entertaining book and had me chucking to myself in places. Thanks to Alrescate and Kiwikat for sharing it.
We have decided to skip NZgoddess as she isn't answering PM's, so I am awaiting to hear from Libragirl before I post it to her.

Posted to Libragirl on Wednesday 3rd November. Enjoy!!

Received this book today, thanks. By all accounts it will be a quick read - I am nearly finished with the book I am reading and will turn to this one next.

I also enjoyed this book which I started before heading off to the USA for a short trip ...finished it on the flight from Auckland to San Francisco and then carried it all the way back to NZ to post to puppymummy when I have an address.

It is an interesting story of a person wanting to change their life and overcome personal "demons". A story that was told with much warmth for the people that touched Jane Stern's life on her personal journey.

Thanks for sharing.

Received safely in the mail today, this book has really been on a journey! Looking forward to it.

'I have a special challenge for the last name on the list and that is
for the book to be released into the wild near an ambulance or fire
station. With a journal entry picture for proof, of course.
If you are interested in joining, just let me know and I'll add you
to the list. If you are particularly keen to accept the challenge,
you can let me know, as well. Otherwise, the last person I hear from
will have the honour of accepting or regecting the challenge.'

This is the challenge I will be undertaking. Lucky I got my partner a digital camera for Christmas!
