I came across this fair-condition softcover - a UK edition, so it's already done some traveling - among the charity-sale books at a local Hannaford supermarket. It seemed perfect for my current Travel challenge, if I can read it in time!

Later: Lots of intriguing details of travel through Egypt, the Sudan, and Ethiopia, with little sketches illustrating various scenes. The author contrasts his latest trip to previous visits, and touches on everything from local politics and economics to the highs and lows of tourist sites. [He displays some annoyance at tourists who claim to have "seen everything" after a few days of well-regulated tours; he, by contrast, has spent much longer in each place, and much of that in out-of-the-way spots.]

He describes the beauties of each place as well as its horrors - which are many, from swarms of pests to such things as punishment-by-cutting-off-hands (described in detail). He even spends time in limbo, waiting out travel-lockdowns with groups of refugees, something that makes travel sound nightmarish - and yet which highlights the plight of those for whom "travel" equates to "fleeing for their lives"...

There are photographs of people and places - and an owl, perched on a column in Egypt, and used to illustrate the sheer size of the carved hieroglyphs next to it. There are accounts of chats with tourists, with people on trains, with beggars and refugees and old friends. All in all, a very "you are there" description of the author's journeys.
