I got Volume One of this series after reading about it in TV Tropes, where the series was described as "put Battle Royale and Death Note in a blender and hit 'puree'." How could I resist? And I liked the first volume so much that I went looking for more. Ordered this one, the last in the series, from Barnes and Noble.

The events of Volume 9 have left Fujimoto increasingly unhappy, both with the ikigami program and with his own choices along the way. He's seen a woman he cared about apparently brainwashed into someone completely different, and he's seen the personal cost of the deaths up close. And now that war is threatening and the government is drafting "social miscreants", he wonders if anything he's been taught about the government's plans is actually true...

One interesting twist early on in this volume is that the "friendly nation" referred to in previous books as a potential ally in case of war is... Japan! And there's a visiting diplomat/scientist who's investigating the National Welfare Act to see if it would work there as well. Hmmm...

As in previous books, some of the conflict comes from ikigami-recipients who are sufficiently loyal to their country or to the program that they find ways to justify it to themselves and others, even to the point of talking a potential rebel out of taking action. In this case, though, a riot-policeman who's received an ikigami winds up confronting the visiting Japanese doctor, with some harrowing comments for her.

And our young Fujimoto, who has finally taken steps against the Act via an anonymous email... ah, yes! Here come the cops to take him in for reprogramming! {shudder}

That's not the end of the story by any means; there are additional twists, betrayals, and revelations, and eventually Fujimoto has another difficult decision to make. Is there hope for his country, or at least for him???

[There's a 2008 live-action film adaptation that's quite good, though it only touches on a small subset of the cases in the manga.]
