I am not a fan of short stories. I didn't realize that this book was a collection of short stories. I did enjoy a few of the stories. Some I didn't care for. Now, to find a new listener.

I don't dislike short stories, but they can be a challenge on audio books. If I am not giving it full attention, I will suddenly find myself in a different story!

Totally love this collection of short stories! They are wildly varied in time and culture, from a woman living in colonial Malaysia, a mermaid-turned-human longing for the sea, a cleaning maid of Marie Curie, to a man with returning from war with a Korean bride. Each captivating story is told in a beautiful voice, transporting me to a different country, a different time.
My favorites include:
“The Great Chain of Being” - an (Indian?) girl is denied a name and marriage by her father, and she finally takes revenge and lives her own life.
“A Gleaming in the Darkness” - a cleaning maid remembers fondly her acquaintance with Marie Curie, and how the glowing jars of radium filled her with wonder and dream.
“The Invitation” - the English wife in colonial England is all ready to introduce the newcomer to life in Malaysia, but in fact has her perfect life shattered by the visit.
“The Story of My life” - Nichola is the daughter of a crusading evangelist, following her mother to protests and meetings, but she begins to have question about her own life and the tactics her group uses.
