Not better and not worse than many books about the subject. This group of boy scouts is slightly irritating and the part of the girl rather unlikely. The author didn't resist the temptation of giving the main investigator a kind of Doctor Watson who is also the narrator. I'm not sure I fully understood why the authorities found it so important not to let the case being solved. As Roosevelt is involved, the border between reality and fiction is unclear. It could have been made shorter.

6 on 10 would be a good rating with you, so I can handle the fact that it would not be as good as I expected, but at least it will be in english. Thanks!

I went through phases of interesting, boring, interesting, boring feeling. After having read The picture of Dorian Grey, in proper 20th century English, and having put The Alienist aside for a few months, this read became suddenly much more easy.
I nearly laughed with the criminal letter from the culprit to the immigrant mother, this sounded so fake.
All in all I did not find it too absurd, or too bad, but I definitely found it too long. Of course the place of the woman in this story sounds improbable, but who are we not to accept the cherish dream of sometimes encountering a Woman Rouletabille?

Letting the case being solved would have given an excuse for the population to cast the doubt on the established order, and on the way to run the state or the police department. As one character puts it, the authorities do not really want to protect the migrants, but give them the chance (or the dream) to establish a better life in New York, compared to where they come from, and that does not require allowing them freedom of judgement. They better stay subjected to the law, threatened by the law, but not be aware that they could ask for better treatment, or even the opportunity to ask for prosecution (as prosecution of any kind was apparently never happening except for top bananas).
