Jodi Picoult is now one of my favorite authors and she truly can wrap up a gripping story. This was not her best book (IMO), but very good anyway! In the end there was "conversation with Jodi Picoult" where she explains why she decided to write about a rape case in her book, I however thought it was quite obvious. I would have expected something else from Picoult.
But anyway, this was a good book and I enjoyed reading it and getting to know the characters! I try to get this moving before the X-mas madness starts in post offices! :) Thanks for sharing!

I finished it in 24 hours. By the time I got to the trial I thought the premise was better than the actual content.
In the beginning there are so many characters, you literally need to write them down to remember. I couldn’t relate to Addie and didn't enjoyed her romance with Jack. I also wished for the book to change focus from magic to reality. I would have rated the book 2 stars if not for the ending. The last sentence gave the story a real deepness, like all the pieces of puzzle suddenly fell into places.
I wish Gillian's situation was examined more closely (I hated her throughout the best part of the book )

Received this a few days ago, thank you for sending Lamilla :) I have read quite a few Jodi Picoult books and only a few have really stood out for me so hopefully this will be one of them!
Edit: June 2015. This was a good read. Jodi Picoult's books do tend to follow a format but I still like reading them for the interesting subjects that she touches on. I wasn't that bothered about any of the characters. My favourite was probably Jack's defence. Not the best Jodi Picoult book but still worth a read for fans. Passed to the next in the ring.

After Jack St Bride served a prison sentence for a rape he didn't commit, he settled in Salem Falls, working at the local diner and falling in love with the proprietress. Then he's accused of raping a teenager for a second time. This is standard Picoult fare of high emotion and ethical dilemmas, it does make you think about how different people react to trauma, about forgiveness and revenge.

I found this book highly dissapointing and for me very unrealistic. I foun the main character very 2 dimensional, very difficult and highly unrealistic. I also felt that everything in the book took ages and ages to get going.
In my opinion very poorly executed compared to some of the other books that Ms picoult has written. Highly predictable to the point of annoyance. I'm glad I didn't buy this book in a shop.

I just knew this book wouldn't give up all its secrets until the absolute last few words - and I was so right (I even figured out what the last secret was too - yuck!). I found this a very interesting look at people, relationships, rape and even Wicca. This book was written in such a clever way, that as the story progresses, each new discovery caused me to rethink & question all that had gone before - which is why I simply couldn't put it down.
There's just a couple of things annoying me (and I'm struggling to find confirmation in the book)... I'm sure that Chloe's gravestone said she lived 1979-1989. But the book is set in 2000, and says she died 6 or 7 years earlier... ? Doesn't quite add up.
Also, I felt Gillian could have been the focus of a whole separate book. And the trial didn't sit quite right with me. Despite these few niggles, I still found it and exciting read.

As with all Jodi Picoult books that I have read, this one didn't disappoint though some parts were a bit bleh and I read through it quickly.
I liked Jack and I was cheering for him all the way. I guessed early on what was "wrong" with Gillian. I found it hard to understand how she could think of accusing Jack. What was her purpose? I didn't see how this would be good for her.
A good story all in all. Thanks for the ray.

WOW! Has this book travelled! I already have a copy so won't keep this for long.
Jack St. Bride was a popular teacher and soccer coach at a girls' prep school when he was falsely accused of statutory rape. Released after eight months behind bars, he arrives in Salem Falls hoping to start fresh. He lands a job washing dishes at the local diner and even falls in love with the owner, Addie. But then a spoiled local girl accuses Jack of assault, forcing his past into the open and turning the town against him.
