From the back cover: Edith Wharton's mastery of the ghost story is revealed in this collection of eleven of her best tales of the supernatural. It includes: "The Lady's Maid's Bell," "The Triumph of Night," "Bewitched," "Mr. Jones," "The Looking Glass," "All Souls," and "The Eyes."

Journal Entry 2 by karendawn from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Wednesday, June 23, 2004
Although all of the stories in this book were well written, I felt very little suspense or anything bonechilling. And I think that I should have; I think that is the effect these stories should have. What is the problem? I know that they were supposed to be ghost stories, so I always expected what happened (even the one that turned out not to be a ghost). Had I read these stories in a different setting (say, just the collected stories of Wharton), they might have had a different effect upon me.
