I have read this book but it was a long time ago and I can't remember much of it. I promise when I read it again I'll let you know what I think. For now you'll have to settle for the blurb on the back of the book.

"In Washington D.C., President Lincoln has just been assasinated and the city is reeling with suspicion, fear, and confusion.

But for fourteen-year-old Emily, the Union's turmoil is nothing compared to her own dire struggles. Sent to live with her uncle Valentine after her mother's untimely death, Emily discovers that one of her best friend's parents was an accomplice of John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln's murderer. Worse yet, on the night of her mother's burial, Emily realizes her uncle is involved in what may be an even uglier business, one she cannot ignore if she is to be true to herself and her mother's memory."

Well there you go, oh yeah, and there's a lovely quote on the front that describes it as "deliciously macabre".

Lovely book "deliciously macabre". I loved the story and I have read the
book within 3-4 days time. Easy to read, I found, even for someone whose
mother language is French and not English.
No regret at all to have béén in this bookring.
Book will be posted to drommie1810 by Air-Mail on 07.04.2004.
Enjoy the book !

Received yesterday, which was appropriate, since April 15 is the anniversary of Lincoln's assassination (it was also National Fluff Appreciation Day, or so the radio informed me, but I don't think that's very pertinent). I have today off, so I'll probably sit out in the unexpected sunshine and read.

Thanks for the postcard chaparal!

Sorry for being AWOL...my internet provider has not been cooperating for the past three weeks or so. Anyway, Ishould be back on track now and apologize for any inconvenience.

I really thought that this was a nicely done bit of historical fiction, and certainly something I'd recommend for anyone preteen on up. The resurrectionist plot was a little heavy-handed, I thought, but otherwise it was very well constructed. I remember vaguely learning about Mrs. Suratt's fate in history class back in middle school, but not about her later exoneration, or about the role her son played in it all.

All in all, a good read for both a historical and a mystery standpoint.

Will send on to vicki9170 when I get her address.

This was a nice piece of historial fiction, but I've read better by her in the past. I enjoyed the suspense worked into it with the resurrectionist mystery, and reading about how the crime was rationalized by those involved. It definitely gives an interesting take on the realities of the growing medical profession at the time.

Thanks for sharing! I mailed this off to Rrrcaron on Tuesday.

This was a pretty good read! It was like two stories in one. Both the Lincoln tragedy and the mysterious occupation of Emily's uncle kept me entertained throughout the read. There was a lot of historical information that was intersting also. I'm glad I read it!!! mysteryfan03 never responded to my pm's, so this book is being sent to caligula03 tomorrow. Sorry I held it so long, and thanks for sharing!

The set up was great; a nice combination of historical fiction and suspense but the pay off disappointed me. Valentine's actions are neither justified nor horrific enough to make him the villian of the story. He just sort of is and his motivations are never fully explained nor are his odd assortment of characters living and working with him. They are just there to be Gothic trapments and that's not enough.
