I meant to give this to MissMarkey in Oxford, but somehow forgot it. Not to worry.
I'm now in Glasgow, just about to leave a lovely little AirBnB flat a stone's throw from town, where we have been most comfortable.
I'll leave this book here as a present for the next guest, or perhaps the owner.
Best described as "Jane Austen goes to sea", the Aubrey-Maturin series of twenty novels written by Patrick O'Brian are a treasure. An epic of friendship and exploration, a glimpse into the early Nineteenth Century, a comic adventure, a philosophical treatise - all these things in a continuing series of novels as Jack the sea captain and Stephen the scientist explore the world during the Napoleonic Wars.
Don't be put off - it's not Tom Clancy with muskets and sailing ships. It's a delight.
