Anthony Burgess' dystopian novel about Alex and his friends.

Visited Kafé Gjest Baardsen today, one of the many Official BookCrossing Zones (OBCZ) in Trondheim and this was one of the books that I picked up.

I actually started reading this book a few years ago but couldn't finish it so I gave it away. Now I'm ready to give it another try.

This is one of the "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die"

I'm almost done reading this now, and I think the main reason it was easier for me reading this now was all the help I got from The Appendix:A Clockwork Orange I found on Wikipedia, without this list of Nadsat words it was almost impossible for me to understand and get into the story.

"In this nightmare vision of youth in revolt, fiftheen-year-old Alex and his friends set out on a diabolical orgy of robbery, rape, torture and murder. Alex is jailed for his teenage delinquency and the State tries him to reform him - but at what cost?"

This story is dark, gloomy and revolting but I think it's interesting try get a peek into the dark sides of humanity sometimes even if it's scary to take in how bad people can be if they are driven by pure evil.

EDIT: After many years sitting on my shelf, I had to let it go. I tried starting it a couple of times and couldn't enter the flow of the book. Maybe later in life, I'll try again.

After reading the first sentences and thinking I had unlearned all my English, I came across words like appy polly loggy and baboochka, and realised this was an invented language with words borrowed from other languages (something I later confirmed with some research). No problem with that, I thought, this is a dystopian novel, so I kept reading.

I was prepared for some violence, because I remember reading about the controversy of Kubrick's film adaptation. But it was still too much and the writing kept giving me a hard time, so in the end I decided to give it up. Not for me :( but thank you for sharing anyway!

I hope this books finds other readers who are able to enjoy it, so it is now available again.
