I was deeply impressed by this book.
I never believed that "Nauseating Nancy" could be a deeply disturbed young woman from "a comfortable suburban family" (this is a quote from the book).
In fact, she was the elder daughter of a Jewish family, with two younger siblings, and her parents did all they could to get her treatment, but met a series of well-intentioned but inefficient doctors who failed to diagnose her... or even worse, failed to share her diagnosis with them.
So this is the heartbreaking account of Nancy's mother, torn between her motherly love and the unconscious desire to get free of this terrible burden, and lead a normal "comfortable suburban" life again.

I was also impressed by Sid's poem, from which the title of this book has been extracted, and how deep her feelings for Nancy ran.
"You were my little baby girl
and I shared all your fears.
Such joy to hold you in my arms
And kiss away your tears.
But now you're gone there's only pain.
And nothing I can do.
And I don't want to live this life
If I can't live for you.
To my beautiful baby girl.
Our love will never die.

Two unfortunate kids, to sum it all up. And the candid account of Nancy's mother.

Thanks for sharing and being patient with me, Andrea99. The book will soon be on its way to NowInka.

I was hoping that the book would reach me before my departure for Oxford and here it is! I'll try to read it in due time to pass it on to Bloedengel at the Convention. Thank you for a travelling bookmark as well!

Oh my! I must admit that when I first signed up for this book I didn't know much about Nancy except the fact that she was Sid's girlfriend. I thought that her troubled behaviour was somehow part of the rock'n'roll lifestyle rather than the psychotic problems in early childhood. There's not much rock'n'roll in this book. Instead, there's a beautiful (if not sad) testimony of love and commitment on Nancy's parents side, especially her mum. A deeply moving experience.
