Donald Crowhurst entered a single handed non-stop 'around the world' sailing race in a trimaran; unfortunately, he not only didn't complete the race, he almost convinced thousands of people he was actually sailing around the world (instead he was sailing up and down the eastern coast of S. America)

When his hoax was discovered, he stepped off the boat into the Atlantic waters, a truly 'disturbed' man.
