A man called Saxby has disappeared in Malaya and a Chinese merchant who collaborated with the Japanese during the war has been killed. It is suggested to Tom Brent that these two events might be connected. He accepts the task of looking for Saxby.
The search begins in the small town of Bukit Kallang. There he meets Teena Chang, a Eurasian girl of great beauty whose job it is to provide entertainment in the place known as The Chinese Love Pavilion. As Brent's feelings for Teena grow deeper the need to find Saxby becomes correspondingly urgent.
What begins as a search for a friend threatens to end as a man-hunt...
