From the back cover:
"English professor and amateur sleuth Loretta Lawson has been working too hard, so her doctor prescribes a stay in the country. But rest is the last thing Loretta finds when she rents a small cottage from Clara Wolstonecroft, a children's book author and passionate peace activist.
At Clara's home, Loretta meets an odd assortment of country residents. And she soon discovers that Clara is being plagued by anonymous letters, mysterious phone calls and strange voices in the night that she has told no one else about. Loretta is certain there is a logical explanation - until one otherwise lovely summer evening, her country quiet is shattered by two gunshots."

Oh. My. Gosh. I picked this up thinking it would be a fun whodunnit. The front cover shows a kitty on a table set of tea, and the title evokes a bit of Agatha Christie (Why Didn't They Ask Evans?).
No. No no no no no no.
It's an amazing feminist mystery written in the 1980s, with echoes of Greenham Common in the plot. But flicking heck, it's bleak. The "they" of the title is us - once we've read the book, why aren't we screaming at the hideous injustices of the world?!
Passed back to TheGreenMan while I rock backwards and forwards in a corner.

Yeah, what Chuggypig said. The cover suggests that this will be a humdrum sort of Agatha Christie ripoff. Loretta is even described as an amateur sleuth. But it's not a happy read, although I did enjoy it a lot. Bleak and upsetting, and not one for those who like a neatly resolved plot.
