Picked this up off the giveaway table at an origami event hosted by the generous folks in Allentown.

I'd never heard of the General Slocum, but this was a fascinating read.

Until September 11, 2001, the burning of this steamboat was New York's worst disaster in terms of number of victims killed: over a thousand people, mostly from one Lutheran parish in "Little Germany" - apparently there's even a reference to it in James Joyce's Ulysses.

Much of the author's website for this book seems to have been taken down, but quite a bit of it, including the photo gallery and endnotes, can be found on the very useful Internet Archive/Wayback Machine. I found the photo in chapter 6 of the couple walking to the cemetery while the man carries his child's coffin under his arm particularly memorable.
