It is useful to become aware of everyday consumption and globalization from time to time. This story is a good reminder of the fact how much we really buy stuff. Yes, the idea is avoiding buying stuff made in China and I think that's a good idea and worth trying but the story also reflects the overall mass consumption to which it is good to give a thought for a moment. What is interesting in this book is that the writer illuminates a life of a typical (?) American family and how they spend money. It's as simple as that - if you are looking for a deeper aspect of globalization, this book does not offer it. The plot is down-to-earth and I guess many readers can easily identify to Sara, Kevin, Wes and Sofie and also their friends and relatives.

I have started to check the origins of the clothes and toys we have at home so this book has had an effect on me. I also dream of buying christmas presents made locally or at least in Finland next Christmas but we'll see. For adults it is easier but when it comes to kids they usually have wishes that are not compatible with your own ideas as you could see in Bongiorni's family.

Thank you eponine38 for giving me this reading experience and it was nice meeting you in Oxford!!

Napattu Kempeleen loppiaismiitissä. I took this from the table in meet-up 6.1.2016. Sounds interesting. Also, the book has travelled a long way from USA, so I think it is worth reading for that reason too. ;) Sorry my bad English. I'm happy I read better than write. :D

Thank you! This really does seem like a true life adventure; somehow these days it would feel easier to live without electricity than China-made products... curious to find out how they managed :D

Well, it's an interesting experiment but I couldn't really relate to someone whose life seems to revolve around children's toys & Christmas presents. And I'm the most reluctant shopper anyway, the kind who only buys something after the old one is broken, so I often noticed my mind wandering to more exciting things than shopping.

I took my time reading this (one chapter at a time, then another book, then back for one or two chapters) and during these weeks I occasionally found myself picking up stuff at home and trying to check where it was made. Funnily enough, most of the stuff didn't say anything at all. Our fridge claims to have been "made in Sweden", but I'm absolutely certain that all bits of the fridge come from somewhere else (= probably China). Back when I worked at Nokia assembling phones, the phone would have a "made in Finland" sticker but nearly all of its parts came inside big boxes from China. No need to expect fridges to be any different...

Moving on as a wishlist RABCK. Enjoy! :)

Thank you so much Sakirmo for thinking of me!

This book feels more relevant now, as Trump has announced a trade war with China. Well, he doesn't read, so this book is beyond him, and he probably can't read labels, so he has no clue how many things average people buy are made in China, in whole or in parts.

I am surprised that this book comes via Finland. I thought this China import situation is mostly in the U.S., and that Europeans are more interested in buying local and keeping things artisanal, and that they value quality over price. Well, you know how Americans tend to have a rosy view of Europeans. : )

Thanks again, great to see you at the BC Con.
