I've had this handsome softcover on my keeper shelves for some years now, and while I enjoyed it, I think it's time it went traveling. It's by Joseph Hansen, who also wrote the marvelous sundrenched-noir "Dave Brandstetter" series, which begins with Fadeout. (Some of the stories in this collection also appeared in Bohannon's Country.)

Among my favorite stories here:

"Surf," which features Dave Brandstetter investigating an insurance scam that resulted in murder.

"Molly's Aim", a wrenching character study and revenge tale - which was Hansen's first success at getting the editors of the Ellery Queen mystery magazine to publish a story with a gay character in it [albeit a secondary one].

"Son of the Morning," which includes issues of whether or not high-profile celebrities who are gay owe it to their fellows to "out" themselves.

All the stories include Hansen's sparse, gritty style, with characters whose motives range from personal gain to protecting the vulnerable.

Arrived back home in my Crime Scene Bookbox

again, I am judging a book by its cover (well, and the fact that Gory had it on her PC shelf for a bit...) so on to Mt TBR it goes

I am being ruthless, and clearing out Mt TBR of books that I will likely never read.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

While doing an audit of my available books, this one could not be found. I believe it may have been donated to the Vietnam Veteran's Association, or possibly to the Friends of the Aurora Public Library, or maybe it was just sent out into the wild alone and scared. Thank YOU for finding this wayward book, I hope you find it a good home!
