I found this fair-condition softcover at the local library book-sale, and as this proto-novel (written in the early 11th century) has been referenced in many other books I've read, I decided to buy it.

The story is, of course, a classic, one of THE classics in world literature, influencing many other works throughout the centuries and across different cultures. Reading it in English probably doesn't do it justice, what with the layers of delicate language, wordplay, and reliance on knowledge of social status and conventions, but it still has its points, from the beautiful, spoiled Genji's youth through the ups and downs of his life and travels - and travails. I think the story works better if read in small increments, the better to savor the setting rather than looking for the next plot-point - and I admit that I had a little trouble with this, wanting to read faster and then getting annoyed because I'd missed some new character or veiled hint.

In some ways the story's almost a sit-com, harsh as that sounds for a work of such history {wry grin}; one bit involved our hero attempting a romantic rendezvous with his lady-love, only to have her flee the bedroom when she heard him approach. Turns out another lady was sleeping there, and Genji basically decided "If my girl ran away she must not like me that much; may as well see what this one's like"... I swear I could almost see the cast of "Friends" at that point!

[There have been several screen adaptations, including this 1951 film and this 1987 animated film. There's a TV Tropes page on the book as well. And I found the web site Tale Of Genji, which provides pictures and maps of locations referenced in the work, along with other supplementary material.]

I chose this book from the movie bookbox organized by innae.

I've had this book once before but passed it on before reading it. Hopefully, this time I will read this classic from the 11th century.

I must admit that I was a bit confused by the plethora of characters in this book. I had to let it go and just read on, although the list of characters in the front of the book was sometimes helpful. It was interesting to read what life was like in the Emperor of Japan's court in the eleventh century. In a word, it was extravagant. The book doesn't have an organized plot but is countless stories of the experiences of the gloriously handsome and talented illegitimate son of the Emperor of Japan who is treated by Japanese society in a manner similar to the way the world treats movie stars today. The book was funny at times. The humor showed through the confusing array of characters and circumstances.
