Gloria is a young lady during The Prohibition era. She is a kind of high-end prostitute who loves to drink in the speakeasies of her time.

The novel begins when she wakes up in somebody else's bed in somebody else's apartment. She is alone, and her night dress had been ripped by the man who has disappeared. As she cannot leave that foreign apartment naked, she steals a mink coat which belongs to the wife of the man. Immediately, she fools a taxi driver into leaving her at some other building, only to go to the apartment of her friend Eddie. That coat will be the link between Weston and Gloria, who can't seem to get rid of one another, until love seems to blossom.
