A stunning novel based on the true story of how German war profiteer and prison camp Direktor Oskar Schindler came to save more Jews from the gas chambers than any other single person during World War II.
The author uses the actual testimony of the Schindlerjuden - Schindler's Jews - to portray the courage and cunning of a good man in the midst of unspeakable evil.

From what I've read about this book, things like actual dialogue was imagined by the author, but all the things that could verified by testimonies and documents are portrayed as they actually happened, so the author stayed as close to the actual truth as he possibly could.

This is a fascinating, sad, upsetting, and redemptive story, all in one. The author manages without any gratuitous graphic descriptions to portray the cruel and often hopeless circumstances in the camps and other places. The distinction between all kinds of different people becomes also clear, e.g. on the "outside" those who who enjoyed murder and destructions, those who were kind of stuck in the system, and those openly or cunningly resisting; and differences among the prisoners as well, e.g. some trying to gain an advantage by cooperating, others clinging to the least shreds of hope, etc.

I was sad that even in the 60s, Schindler was still hissed at by some Germans in Frankfurt where he lived some of the time.

I had to finally read this important piece of Holocaust literature myself first, before giving it away. I'm happy to send it on to iwillrejoice now, though. She has it on her wishlist. It'll be a late birthday present for the birthday group for 2014.
