I just found this on audiobook so I will *read* it that way, or rather, let Adam Gopnik read it to me!

2011 Massey Lectures, celebrating 50 years of this series. The topic: Winter - Five Windows on the Season, presented by Adam Gopnik. Non-Canadians probably won't recognize the Massey Lectures, a series on the CBC radio programme, Ideas. It's a collaboration between CBC, Massey College of U of T, and House of Anansi Press and was established in 1961.

I enjoy listening to Adam Gopnik read his own books on audiobook (I've listened to 2 so far) and this was no exception. The lectures, recorded before a live audience in 5 cities across the country, were titled: Romantic Winter, Radical Winter Recuperative Winter, Recreational Winter, and Remembering Winter. He covered a lot of ground, and included a lot of tangential info, from art, to history, to science, poetry and more. It was thorough and all pretty interesting though I did find my mind wandering at times and wondering, too, where it was all going. But Gopnik knows how to pull it all together and over all, it was good.

This book - the text of a series of lectures by a Montrealer (now in NYC) - is going to make great cottage/vacation reading. Who wouldn't enjoy reading about snowstorms, whiteouts, frigid temperatures, cold feet, frozen engines, trudging through salty slush in July? Donfiction just caught a look at the cover, and said, "That's MINE!"
