From back cover:
"Croydon is a very attractive suburb of the greater city of Melbourne. From whatever direction you arrive, Croydon is always green with the Dandenong Ranges in the background giving a setting of great beauty and charm.

Yet Croydon was not always a suburb of Melbourne, because as recently as 1955 you could still call Croydon a quite separate country town with great individuality. Many roads were unmade. Arches of gum trees overhanging the roads were 'the norm'. Croydon had a famous market, beloved by many people, whilst the electric train service ran on the hour.

As you view this book, one can identify great changes. For some this is a worry, whilst for others it is simply a fact of life. Our forefathers worked hard to settle Croydon, and although they may look somewhat different to us with their strange costumes, top hats and facial hair, we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude, for they got Croydon on the move - with banks, churches, shops, roads and a democratic system of local government.

Have a good, hard look at all the photographs in this book. The time spent will be worthwhile, for we need to understand that even now we are setting in place structures and facilities that in fifty, a hundred years or so, will be examined, debated and measured for their quality of worth, progressiveness and foresight. We are as much pioneers today in what we do as were our forefathers of the late 1800s."
