Gentle mystery story that seems to concentrate more on general life in Botswana than the mysteries themselves. We learn a lot about the changes wrought on the country by modernising and the conflict between the traditional rural lifestyles of the older generation and the Western selfishness practiced by younger town-dwelling people. I like how McCall Smith describes the landscape and scenery of Botswana making the country seem an perfect idyll on one hand while also depicting its citizens as being exactly as found everywhere else! Mma Ramotswe is a great creation, as is her assistant, Mma Makutsi, but I found the resolution of their caseload somewhat unsatisfactory. This is not a Detective novel in the traditional sense!
