Picked up at an athletic team fundraiser for release.
2007 Scott O'Dell Award winner, although I didn't realize it until after I'd released this copy.
Update 2015: I listened to an audio version of this book (read by Julie Dretzin).
I enjoyed Dewey's story: she sounds like quite a kid. Abandoned by her mother and bounced around to various locations due to her father's work as a scientist for the government during WWII, she becomes quite independent. When she joins him at "the hill" in New Mexico, she finds a special community working to end the war using "the gadget".
I don't know how authentic they were, but I found the jump rope rhyme and naughty lyrics amusing; I asked my mom but she doesn't remember anything like that - the focus here was more on the Pacific war so maybe the anti-Hitler rhymes weren't as prevalent.
Applying to colleges from a high school with a PO box for an address, in a place that doesn't officially exist, does sound difficult, at best.
As I suspected, the "green glass sea" of the title refers to a very special type of rock known as trinitite.
