FRIEND OR FOE by MICHAEL MORPURGO (1977)
ISBN: 9780749746902 (UK PB)
Publisher: Egmont Book Ltd (2001) (Pages: 112)

Cover: 'There was nothing threatening or frightening about them, they were just two exhausted, pale-looking men with sad eyes and kind faces. These were the men who had bombed London and Plymouth and killed thousands. Yet one of them had saved his life.'

It's the Second World War, and the Germans are bombing London. Everyone hates them, especially David: they killed his father. Now, because of the Blitz, David and his friend Tucky have been evacuated to the countryside, where they must live with strangers. Then one night they see a German plane crash on the moors. They feel they should hate the airmen inside, but can they just leave them to die?
--------------------

Immediately engaging this, before we know it, raises issues of right and wrong, loyalty and gratitude. In so doing it highlights the role friendship and trust can play in developing confidence and an understanding of personal responsibility. Friend or Foe packs a quiet punch, is thought-provoking and makes for an inspiring read.

This was a really good book. A lot of moments to ponder over; when Mr Reynolds is asked to choose a child, should they help or not?

I will keep this book for a while.

We did like this book a lot. It was an interesting book that you could learn a lot from. We all like books that contains a story from the Second World War because we think these books have a special meaning. We liked how the story was build up. It's theme and meaning made special emotions. The book was something that could fit many ages. The story was easy to understand and it was easy to try and get into the different roles.

We did like the part when David and Tucky found the plane and David changed his mind about Germans and decided to help them instead of leave them alone. It also made us happy that they ended up in a family who wanted to take good care of them. This story weren't build up by exciting and terrifying moments, but it was still interesting to listen to. It made us think more about how life was like during these periods, especially how a child was affected by it.
