I just finished this one. I enjoyed it thoroughly and loved the style of the author. A great character study and a tale of the loss of innocence.

Reserved for schwester, in the European WishList Tag Game; I would like to read it first.
Currently reading it. :)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
What starts as a Graham Greene-like Cold War story set in Berlin, soon takes an unexpected turn... I don't want to give too much away.
The character description is flawless, I often felt I was sharing space and time with them. It really kept me interested.
And once again, no-one describes a love scene like Mr McEwan, as was confirmed in "Atonement". Let me quote:
"She interlocked her fingers with his, and it was at this moment, rather than later in the bedroom, or later still when they talked about themselves with greater freedom, that Leonard felt irrevocably bound to her. Their fingers fitted well, the grip was intricate, unbreakable, there were so many points of contact. In this poor light, and without his glasses, h e could not see which fingers were his own. (...) The abandonment was delicious. Something was pouring out of him, through his palm and into hers; something was spreading back up his arm, across his chest, constricting his throat. His only thought was a repetition: so this is it, it's like this, so this is it..."
Thanks to mcsar for sending; indeed, I liked it as much as you did.
The book will soon continue its travel to fulfil a wish... :)

Thank you! At least with BC books I am able to live yogi-like in the moment and never remember which books are going to arrive soon - I even managed to be surprised by books which travelled only a week :-)
I just started Crime&Punishment, but I am starting to suspect some book might want to sneak in between Crime and Punishment, and this is one of the suspects...

Crime & Punishment had to wait... This is a great book. I am most impressed by the cutting-into-human-tissue part. Under quite different circumstances :-) I have cut into human tissue a hell of a lot of times and would not call it an idea that freaks me out. So normally with scenes like that I just keep thinking, no, not that way, it will be much more mess than necessary or some technical stuff like that (and surprisingly often with scenes like that there are anatomical errors I cannot believe). But that one was so desperate, even I almost got sick. That´s quite an achievement :-) Ha, but seriously, that means I really felt with the character... (and not only in that scene)...
The book is reserved to continue its journey to Berlin.

Thanks so much, schwester! I look forward to reading this book!
What is it with Ian McEwan? I really like his books, but there is always but one part (in every single book!) that I hate. So when I started reading this book I thought to myself "I wonder which part I will dislike this time". :) I totally loved the whole Berlin-of-the-1950s story. And the characters. Wonderful! But then came that gory scene. Pages and pages of it. So there you have it. Wonderful book again, and again with a part that I simply can't stand. I had to skip a few pages. The end was great again. :)
Hand-over over a cup of tea, to be passed on to a new reader during the UK convention. :)
Thank you! I spotted this on grovalskii's shelf and on somebody's wishlist. It will soon be travelling with me to Scotland for the Convention.
(I read it soon after moving to Berlin. Brilliant!)

Wishlist surprise for somebody attending the International Bookcrossing Convention 2023 in Falkirk.
A lovely surprise, thank you - and a well travelled book!
My wife borrowed this to read on holiday and loved it - a reread for her but the first physical book she’s read all the way through for several years :-) bumping up my own holiday tbr pile now!
Read this one today while on a camping holiday in North Berwick. McEwan never disappoints- I’ve read several of his books now and he’s a great writer, all of them different. Thank you for sharing this! I intend to wild release on our walk tomorrow.

We picked it up at Tantallon Castle. I started to read it. But just couldn't get into it. Leaving it on the train from Amsterdam to Maastricht - hoping someone has better luck with it than I do!
