At a suburban barbecue one afternoon, a man slaps an unruly 3-year-old boy.

The boy is not his son.

It is a single act of violence, but this one slap reverberates through the lives of everyone who witnesses it happen....


I remember all the hype around this TV series - but didn't watch it! Would rather read...

Haven't seen the TV series so I don't know if that ran with the same format of each chapter...or I guess episode...being about one of the individuals who was attending a BBQ when an obnoxious brat (I blame the parents!) was slapped by another adult, & I thought this format worked really well, though I felt my interest slipping slightly at Manolis' part. I can't say I liked any of the characters but I think in this case it wasn't a problem & at least they credible. They all had their flaws & imperfections (fidelity doesn't seem to be a concept they know) & the dynamics of the group was interesting. There's quite a bit of strong language (so not a book for you if you don't approve - & a bit too much of what men get up to on their own for my liking!) but it all comes over as quite credible.

So whose side was I on? Well, that's tougher to answer than I first thought! Hugo certainly needed disciplining (IMHO) but if the parents won't do it then should someone else?...the jury's still out...
